Marine snail venom could improve insulin for diabetic patients.

Although moderately mobile, marine cone snails have perfected several strategies to capture prey. Some fish-hunting species release venom into the surrounding water. Within the plume of toxic venom, the fish succumbs to fast-acting insulin that renders it immobile. As the fish flounders, the snail emerges from its shell to swallow the pacified victim whole. Researchers detailed the function of cone snail insulins, bringing them one step closer to developing a faster-acting insulin to treat diabetes.

New pill can deliver insulin through the stomach.

A research team has developed a drug capsule that could be used to deliver oral doses of insulin, potentially replacing the injections that patients with type 2 diabetes have to give themselves every day.

Organic waste as a resource for renewable medicine development

(email: bioenergy.res@gmail.com)

Enzymology - Cellulase

Cellulase a multi-component enzyme system is used to hydrolyze waste cellulose into glucose a fermentable sugar. Glucose is used as a feedstock for the synthesis of renewable medicines.

Cellulase enzymes obtained from:

Trichoderma viride

Aspergillus niger

Garden snails.

Organic Waste - Waste Paper

The cellulose component of various waste paper materials is bio-hydrolyzed with cellase enzymes into glucose, a fermentable sugar.

Waste paper bio-converted includes:

Office paper, foolscap paper, newspaper, cardboard, filter paper, brown envelope paper and advertising paper from Woolworths and Pick 'n Pay.

Taking Control of Diabetes

 What is a clinical trial?

Countless numbers of people volunteer for research studies to help answer medical and health questions. Volunteers who take part in clinical trials usually start by answering a host of questions about their health and habits. Those who qualify to take part may be asked to take experimental drugs, experimental therapies (such as acupuncture to treat headaches), new food supplements or exercise regimens.

Why An Upgraded Hippocratic Oath Is Needed In The Digital Era

The Hippocratic Oath is the most famous text in Western medicine and constitutes the ethical basis of the medical profession. For centuries, it has provided an overview of the principles of this noble mission and doctors’ professional behavior. At the dawn of a new era in medicine, it is high time to rewrite the Oath so that it would reflect the state of technological development, changes in social structures and in general, the requirements of the 21st century.

*Drugs Affecting the Endocrine System - Insulin and Hypoglycemic Drugs

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas by the islets of Langerhans, which regulates the amount of glucose in the blood. The lack of insulin causes a form of diabetes.
Oral hypoglycemic drugs are used only in the treatment of type 2 diabetes which is a disorder involving resistance to secreted insulin.

PHARMACOLOGISTS:

Alexander Flemming

Antibiotics are compounds produced by bacteria and fungi which are capable of killing, or inhibiting, competing microbial species. This phenomenon has long been known; it may explain why the ancient Egyptians had the practice of applying a poultice of moldy bread to infected wounds. But it was not until 1928 that penicillin, the first true antibiotic, was discovered by Alexander Fleming, Professor of Bacteriology at St. Mary's Hospital in London.

Thomas Renton Elliott

A young graduate student named Thomas Renton Elliott was responsible for providing the experimental results and the conceptual advances in understanding of chemical neurotransmitters.  Despite the fact that attributions to Elliott are for the most part buried in the annals of scientific history, the remarkable story of this brilliant young student should be recounted.
